In October 2019, I had the honor of exploring Ecuador and the Galápagos—a journey that left me both enchanted and inspired. I sailed on the Sea Star luxury cruise, a three-time World Travel Award winner, and felt the magic of the islands come alive. Cruising through the archipelago, I witnessed moments that defy description: snorkeling alongside white-tipped reef sharks, marveling at blue-footed boobies performing their enchanting mating dances, and experiencing the true harmony between the island’s inhabitants and its wild, untamed nature.
The Sea Star luxury cruise, a 16-passenger yacht with impeccable service and expert naturalist guides, whisked us away on a 5-night odyssey across seven islands, revealing the hidden treasures of both the Southern Islands of Floreana and Española as well as the diverse wonders of the Central Islands. Each day was meticulously planned, yet full of spontaneity, laughter, and moments that felt both personal and profound.
My journey began in Quito, where I checked into the exquisite Illa Experiences Hotel—a beautifully refurbished 1700s colonial home in the heart of San Marcos. From the moment I arrived, I was embraced by the warmth and hospitality of the locals. The hotel, a perfect blend of colonial charm and contemporary style, sits just a five-minute stroll from the historic center, offering captivating views of the surrounding mountains and the iconic “Virgin of El Panecillo.” Each day at Illa was an opportunity to dive deeper into Ecuador’s rich heritage—learning the age-old art of coffee-making and discovering the secrets behind the country’s signature refreshing drinks.
One of the most unforgettable moments was an impromptu musical gathering at Cotacachi Lagoon. Alongside my travel partner Jarek and our engaging guide Jorge Castillo—an aspiring musician—we shared a magical afternoon of music and camaraderie. With heartfelt tunes in Spanish, Polish melodies, and even a dash of Bryan Adams, that spontaneous concert remains etched in my heart.
Transitioning from the highlands of Quito to the surreal landscapes of the Galápagos was nothing short of transformative. On the Sea Star cruise, every day brought new discoveries and connections. Our naturalist guide enriched our journey with insights into the archipelago’s endemic species, and our small group quickly bonded over shared wonder and laughter. Among the many memorable encounters, the playful spirit of retired veterinarian Dr. John Tandy—an 85-year-old with a remarkable zest for life—remains a standout. His impromptu serenade for the dolphins and his captivating conversations with nature itself turned every moment into an enchanting memory.
